Fisheries for common octopus in Europe: socioeconomic importance and management

The European Union (EU) is one of the most important markets for cephalopods in world. Currently, small-scale fisheries targeting common octopus EU are considerable social and economic importance, especially southern waters where more consumed as part traditional diet. Octopuses Europe excluded from quota regulations under Common Fisheries Policy Member States manage their employing different input output control measures, octopus. level participation fishing industry management activity varies amongst some arrangements place tailored at local level. This manuscript focuses on four countries with artisanal (Portugal, Spain, Italy Greece). It describes compares current status each country, socioeconomic place, opportunities challenges future. Despite increasing importance Europe, few have collected detailed data these fisheries. information provided contributes to increase knowledge about human dimensions Europe.
